Air New Zealand’s cancellation of 1100 domestic flights has renewed national concern about the vulnerability of regional air links, prompting strong commentary from AIANZ Chief Executive Simon Wallace.
Simon highlighted that recent reductions show the urgent need for Government investment in aviation infrastructure, stressing that air services are as essential as roading and rail for regional wellbeing. He warned that the loss or weakening of regional routes “rips out lifelines for communities,” noting the Blenheim–Christchurch connection as a critical healthcare link.
Mayors across Marlborough, Gisborne, Timaru, and Westland echoed his concerns, emphasising that their regions depend heavily on reliable air services—especially where road networks remain fragile. While Air NZ has described the cuts as temporary, local leaders say prolonged reductions would force difficult conversations about long‑term infrastructure funding.
Simon reiterated AIANZ’s position that secure, accessible regional air connectivity is essential for New Zealanders and requires national-level support.
