The aviation industry is calling on the Government to develop a specific aviation fuel contingency plan, following the release of its updated national fuel resilience framework last Friday.
While the Government has stated there are no immediate fuel supply issues and has urged the public not to stockpile fuel during the first two phases of the plan, industry leaders say greater clarity is needed — particularly for aviation.
Simon Wallace, Chief Executive of the Aviation Industry Association of New Zealand, said fluctuating reports on fuel stock levels have raised concern within the sector.
“Aviation fuel supply is critical for emergency services, agriculture, regional connectivity and conservation,” Wallace said. “Our members want clear assurance that these essential services will be prioritised if fuel rationing is introduced.”
Under the Government’s framework, aviation may be subject to prioritisation measures during later stages, with fuel purchasing limits applied according to service importance. AIANZ is advocating for domestic aviation — including emergency, agricultural and community services — to be clearly prioritised.
The industry is also facing significant pressure from rapidly rising fuel prices, with some operators unable to pass increased costs on under fixed contracts or training arrangements.
AIANZ continues to engage with Government agencies and is seeking greater transparency and certainty to protect New Zealand’s essential aviation services.
