The Aviation Industry Association of New Zealand (AIANZ) has welcomed the Government’s announcement that Engineering Technology will become one of nine new industry-led senior secondary school subjects.
Led by the Transport Industry Skills Board, the subject will introduce students to engineering concepts, systems and technologies across a range of sectors, including aviation, while helping connect learners to future study, apprenticeships and employment pathways.
AIANZ Chief Executive Simon Wallace said the initiative has the potential to strengthen the aviation sector’s future workforce.
“Aviation relies on a strong pipeline of people with practical engineering and technical capabilities. Introducing students to these opportunities earlier will help broaden awareness of aviation careers and encourage more young people to consider pathways into aircraft engineering and the wider industry.”
The announcement comes as the aviation industry continues to focus on attracting and developing the next generation of engineers and technical specialists to support long-term sector growth.
The Engineering Technology subject will be developed during 2026 and 2027, with delivery expected to begin for Year 12 students in 2029 and Year 13 students in 2030.
